What is ECO Funding?

The Energy Company Obligation or 'ECO' is a domestic energy efficiency funding programme directed by government and paid through the green levy by large energy companies. As a trusted partner with years of experience, we work with local authorities and councils to create energy efficient homes, delivered through the ECO scheme, enabling us to achieve a reduction in fuel poverty and improve the overall energy efficiency of homes across the UK.

Together with our contractors, we deliver a variety of home insulation measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation, to thermostat valves, solar panels and much more. We offer extra warmth for your home at no cost to you and the best part is, you don't have to be an Experthousing customer to benefit.

Helping the UK's most vulnerable households keep warm, save money and reduce carbon emissions by delivering the right solutions for them.

What Does ECO4 Cover?

ECO4 covers a far broader range of improvements than previous schemes. Here are the main measures available to qualifying households.

Loft insulation

Loft Insulation

Prevents up to 25% of heat loss through the roof. Saves an average of £445/year and cuts CO₂ by up to 1,000kg annually.

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity Wall Insulation

Fills the gap in cavity walls to prevent up to one third of heat loss. Installed by accredited partner installers with a 25-year guarantee.

Solid wall insulation

Solid Wall Insulation

Internal or external insulation for pre-1920 solid-walled homes, dramatically improving energy efficiency ratings.

Boiler replacement

Boiler Replacement

Replace an old, inefficient boiler with a modern A-rated condensing boiler. Significant bill savings and reduced carbon output.

Air source heat pump

Air Source Heat Pumps

A low-carbon alternative to gas boilers, generating heat from the outside air even in cold weather. Eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme top-up.

Solar PV panels

Solar PV Panels

Generate free electricity from the sun, reduce energy bills dramatically, and export surplus energy back to the grid.

Central heating system

First-Time Central Heating

For homes with no existing central heating, ECO4 can fund the installation of a complete heating system.

Underfloor insulation

Underfloor Insulation

Insulating beneath timber ground floors to eliminate cold draughts and reduce heat loss through the floor.

ECO4 Schema Benefit

Did you know that the fourth phase of the Government's Energy Company Obligation called ECO4 is currently accepting applications from homeowners? ECO is a scheme requiring energy suppliers to improve energy-efficiency in UK homes while tackling fuel poverty. Running since 2013, this latest phase of the scheme has £4 billion of funding allocated to it and it is expected to run until 31 December 2026.

Funding Allocated

The latest phase of ECO has £4 billion of government funding available.

Homes Upgraded

We estimate that over its four years ECO4 will upgrade around 450,000 homes, most of them to EPC band C.

Average Savings

It will reduce household bills by around £290 on average, but for the least efficient homes this could be up to £1,600.

Scheme Duration

ECO4 is expected to run until 31 December 2026. Energy suppliers are to deliver lifetime savings by installing energy efficiency measures.

ECO4, Frequently Asked Questions

The value of ECO4 improvements varies depending on your property type and which measures are installed. Loft insulation alone can save you £445 per year on energy bills. A full package including wall insulation, a new heating system, and solar panels could be worth £10,000–£20,000 or more in works carried out completely free to you.
ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026. The government has indicated that a successor scheme (ECO5) will follow, but terms and eligibility may change. We recommend applying as soon as possible to secure your entitlement under the current scheme's terms and conditions.
Yes, both private and social housing tenants can benefit from ECO4, provided the landlord gives permission for installation. Private landlords in England are also subject to Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES), which means they have an incentive to improve their properties. Our team can help communicate the benefits of the scheme to your landlord if needed.
PAS 2035 is the UK's national standard for the energy efficiency retrofit of domestic buildings. All ECO4 installations must comply with this standard, which requires a Retrofit Coordinator to oversee the project and ensure that all measures work together effectively without causing any unintended consequences (such as condensation or damp). ExpertHousing works with PAS 2035-compliant Retrofit Coordinators on every project.
GBIS focuses exclusively on insulation measures and has broader eligibility based on EPC rating and council tax band. ECO4 covers a much wider range of measures (insulation, heating systems, heat pumps, solar panels) but has stricter income/benefits eligibility criteria. Many households qualify for both schemes, contact us and we'll identify the best route for your situation.
Because ECO4 takes a whole-house approach, the installation timeline is typically longer than a single-measure scheme. A complete retrofit package (insulation + heating) usually takes 4–12 weeks from survey to completion, depending on the measures required and installer availability. We keep you fully informed throughout the process.
